Consolation plus knockout is a main bracket with a second one beside it. Lose the first round and you drop into the plate. The title still comes from the main draw. The plate is there so a first loss is not the last match of the day.
The gold cup is the tournament. The plate is the promise that first-round losers still play.
A straight knockout sends first-round losers home. A group stage gives everyone matches before anyone is eliminated. Consolation sits between them: the day is still a knockout, and the pairs who lose the opener get a bracket of their own. It is not qualification. Nobody is playing to get into the main draw. They were already in it. They lost.
Two brackets, one champion
Everyone starts in the main knockout. Losers of the first round move into the consolation. Winners stay on the path to the title. Semi-final losers do not drop down, unless you have added a third-place match and said so. The consolation is for the first loss, because that is the loss that would otherwise end the day before people have warmed up.
Eight pairs, main draw only, is seven matches, and four pairs play once. Add a plate for those four — two semis and a final — and you have ten matches. Every pair plays at least twice. The champions play three. The plate winners also play three: one loss, then two wins that do not touch the title.
The plate does not change who wins the tournament. It changes who drives home after a single set.
The main draw, same as any knockout
Eight pairs. No byes. The draw is the quarter-finals. Everything after that is results falling into the next box.
Main draw · this one names the champion
Ana & Ben win the tournament. Mia & Noor are the finalists. Eva & Finn and Ines & Jules lose the semis and stop. They already played twice. The four pairs who lost a quarter-final — Carla & Dani, Gia & Hugo, Kim & Leo, Omar & Pia — are the consolation.
Do not offer the semi-final losers a place in that plate. They would be entering a bracket the others have already started, and you would be rewriting the draw in the hallway. If they want one more match, play a third-place match between them. Keep it off the plate.
The plate, which is a real bracket
The plate is a real match. The title is still on the other court.
Pair the quarter-final losers in the order they fell: first match against second, third against fourth. Same idea as a crossover. You are not reseeding them by how close the loss was. “They only lost 7–6, so they should be favourites” is a conversation, not a draw.
Consolation · the four quarter-final losers
Carla & Dani lost their first match of the day and won the plate. Omar & Pia lost the opener, won one, and lost the plate final. Gia & Hugo and Kim & Leo played the opener and a plate semi. Count it:
| Pair | Main draw | Plate | Matches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ana & Ben | Won the tournament | — | 3 |
| Mia & Noor | Lost the final | — | 3 |
| Eva & Finn | Lost the semi | — | 2 |
| Ines & Jules | Lost the semi | — | 2 |
| Carla & Dani | Lost the quarter | Won the plate | 3 |
| Omar & Pia | Lost the quarter | Lost the plate final | 3 |
| Gia & Hugo | Lost the quarter | Lost the plate semi | 2 |
| Kim & Leo | Lost the quarter | Lost the plate semi | 2 |
Nobody played once. That is the only reason to add the second bracket. Call the trophy a plate, a shield, a consolation cup. Do not call it the tournament. Ana & Ben won the tournament.
Enter the quarter-final result before you send anyone to the plate. A pair that “might still be in the main draw, we’re checking” will not walk calmly onto the small court.
The short version, when lunch already slipped
The full plate is three matches. If the morning slipped, cut it in public, using the backup you already announced.

1
One round, and stop
The four losers play two matches. Winners get the plate. No plate final. Everyone who lost the opener still got a second match, which was the promise. You saved one slot.
-
2
Shorter scoring on the plate only
Main draw stays best of three. Plate is one set, or a match tie-break. Write that before the quarters, not after the first set runs long.
-
3
Drop the plate before you drop the final
The championship is the main draw. A missing plate is a disappointment. A missing final is a different event from the one you sold.
The longer version of “the day does not fit” is in How many courts and hours you need. Consolation is three matches you chose to add. It is also the first three you are allowed to remove.
When the second bracket is worth it
Use it
- A paid knockout where one match would feel like a swindle
- You have a court free while the semis are on
- Club championships that still want a winner today
- Any flyer that already says “everyone plays at least twice”
Skip it
- You are already late and the final is the thing that matters
- The field came for a social mixer. That is an Americano, and pairs should rotate
- You wanted a fair ranking. A plate is not a ranking. A round robin is
- You cannot staff two brackets. One abandoned plate is worse than none
Keep the scoring, the balls, and the referee attention honest on both courts. A plate that starts twenty minutes late, with the dead balls, teaches people that the second bracket was a favour. It is a match they entered for.
The other draws
Same club, different Saturday.
The plate should not be a second whiteboard
Padel Playground runs the main knockout and moves the first-round losers into the consolation when the score goes in. Two brackets, one link, and the champion is still the pair that never lost.
Does the plate winner count as a tournament winner?
No. They won the consolation. The champion is the pair that won the main draw. Print both if you want. Do not let the announcements blur them.
Who drops into the consolation?
First-round losers only, in the usual club version. Semi-final losers have already played twice. If you want them to play again, give them a third-place match against each other. Leave the plate alone.
What if we have byes in round one?
A pair that receives a bye has not lost, so they stay in the main draw. They also have not played, so “everyone plays twice” is not true yet. Either give byes only when you accept that, or avoid a first round made of byes and play the consolation off the first round that was actually contested.
